In mineral processing processes, comminution is a keep step for ore beneficiation, in which stage the particles are reduced in size by a combination of crush and abrasion. The most common mills are tumbling mills of rotating cylindrical steel vessels. The grinding medium, made of steel or the ore itself, is usually free to move inside the mill.

There are three basic types for tumbling mills including rod, ball and autogenous. They have similar structures that all of them have a horizontal cylindrical shell. However, there are still some differences.

Rod mills are featured with the length of its cylindrical shell, which should be between 1.5 and 2.5 times its diameter. The ratio would prevent the rods from turning so that they become wedged across the diameter of the cylinder. As for the ball mills, they are more suitable for fine finishing for the larger surface area per unit weight than rods. The Autogenous mills are more and more popular in the recent years. They have many advantages such as lower capital costs, ability to handle wet and sticky materials when deal with some ores.
